Headless Shopify vs a regular theme — when is it worth it?

Go headless when a Liquid theme is fighting you: you need a bespoke PDP, custom merchandising, an app-like storefront, or performance a theme can't reach. For a standard catalog with light customization, a good theme is cheaper and faster to ship. Hydrogen or Astro + Storefront API — which should I pick?

Hydrogen (Shopify's React framework) deploys to Oxygen for free, has first-class cart and checkout primitives, and is the safe default for a rich, interactive storefront. Astro + the Storefront API gives a leaner, content-heavy storefront with minimal JS — great for catalogs that are mostly browse-and-buy. I'll recommend one after seeing your catalog and roadmap.

Does checkout stay on Shopify if I go headless?

Yes. Only the storefront goes headless — checkout, payments, inventory, orders, and admin stay on Shopify. Customers hand off to Shopify's hosted, PCI-compliant checkout, so you keep Shop Pay, discounts, and your existing apps where they matter.

Will a headless storefront be faster than my current theme?

Usually, yes — a custom React/Astro storefront removes theme bloat, third-party theme apps, and render-blocking scripts, and ships an optimized PDP and collection pages with Core Web Vitals in the green. Can you migrate my existing theme store to headless?
